  • Dear Jane, dear Alicia,

I was enormously saddened to learn of your loss. Although I didn't know Claude very well, I particularly enjoyed my conversations with him at the splendid lunch you organised, Jane, last September. After such a long life together, you must miss him terribly. He, the two of you, and the rest of your family are very much in my thoughts and prayers at this very sad time.

    My sincerest condolences,
    Christopher

  • To my dearest Mother-in-Law, my darling husband, beloved siblings-in-law, nieces and nephews and children

He is at rest now. But what warm and loving memories Claude has left behind.

You have lost the patriarch, the man who loved you, who put his family first, who cared about how you were at all times, who offered support through your projects, your education and career, who helped you when you fell, taught you to ride a bike, to swim, to fish, to shoot, to climb a tree, to eat oysters and urchins, to make foie gras and was always there when you returned home, with his welcoming smile, a glass of wine and a ready ear.

He always had the courage of his convictions and was not afraid to express his view of right and wrong.

He was so kind and welcoming to me when I first met him 37 years ago. Over the decades, he was unfailingly caring and welcoming. I was always pleased to sit next to him, especially at our long lunches or dinners, and enjoy entertaining and interesting chats including tales of his travels, the wars he lived through and fought in, and to share a little of his knowledge of how things worked, antiquity, food, plants and animals. I was amazed at his ability to fix almost anything!

Losing my dear Father-in-Law will leave a gaping hole but with a familiar echo. His passionate cries of objection when something did not go as he wished never scared me - it became as comfortable as a grandfather-clock’s chimes. All was right with the world when Claude was objecting that someone had left the door open or used too much ice! It was when he was quiet - in times of real crisis and illness - that I worried. But that was also when he came into his own, with his sensible, calm support and steadfast knowledge that you CAN cope and battle-on, no matter what tragedies are thrown at you.

That example of resilience is the thought which I hope will sustain you now and in the sad days to come.

He adored and was so proud of his talented wife and his family, and he always made me feel included in his warmth.

To dearest Jane especially I wish strength and courage at this horrible time. Please remember that his echo will always be there through us, your family. We will do all we can to support you and we love you very much.

Your loving daughter-in-law, sister-in-law, wife, mother and aunt
    Ali
